When African American models such as Bethann Hardison, Pat Cleveland, Alva Chinn, and Billie Blair boarded the plane to Paris in 1973, they had no idea they would help change the course of fashion and pull off its biggest coup. The 1973 Grand Divertissement at Versailles became history and legend for pitting the crème de la crème of French couture fashion - Givenchy, Dior, Ungaro, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Cardin against upstart American designers Halston, Oscar de la Renta, Anne Klein, Stephen Burrows and Bill Blass. It was not only the first time French and American designers were shown together but it smashed the glass ceiling loudly and irrevocably for ethnic models in high fashion across the globe. This year, the rue Cambon label has invested in a show at the Château de Versailles. Beauty spots, bottom-heavy skirts, and floral chokers infused spectators with a feeling of Marie Antoinette's heyday. Baroque-tinged wigs and ruffled, courtly hair bows in silk, meanwhile, added a splash of androgyny. It's well known that Karl Lagerfeld is a workaholic, but in this show he seemed to have studied every reference under the sun. Wednesday, April 1 | 6 pm Robin Givhan, Pulitzer Prize–winning fashion critic for the Washington Post, presents her first book, The Battle of Versailles, the story of a 1973 face-off between five American designers—including Halston and Oscar de la Renta—and five French designers (Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Cardin among them). Buoyed by a decision to use ten African American models (unheard of then), the underdog Yanks pulled off a victory, cementing American fashion as a major player on the international stage. A book signing followed the presentation. http://www.fitnyc.edu/museum/events/
